Commissioned in 2006 for the Main Line Art Center's Outdoor Public Art Project, Kites: Art Takes Flight, to commemorate the 300th Birthday of Benjamin Franklin.
A Penny Saved Is A Penny Earned celebrates one of Benjamin Franklins' most beloved adages from Poor Richard's Almanac. It is not only kinetic but also musical as the pennies jingle against each other in the wind creating a soft wind chiming effect.
The Curator, Mary Salvante, and fellow Kite artist, Jeff Schaller, and I were interviewed on this project by Susan Lewis of WRTI (National Public Radio) for Creatively Speaking with Jim Cotter in June 2006.
The maquette is in the Permanent Collection of The Main Line Art Center, Haverford, PA, USA. The 12’ kite was purchased by a donor for permanent siting at Project H.O.M.E., Philadelphia, PA, USA, one of the city's major non-profit organizations.
